INTRODUCTION:
Growing old is not the end of the world, or the end of the fun, or fulfillment, or even sex. Sure, the older we get, the more things can go wrong with our bodies and our lives. We have crises to face, big and small, but the way we deal with them is the key.
So we mourn the dreams and goals of years past—cast aside, unfulfilled—because now we’re afraid it’s too late to do anything about them. To top that off, the older we get, the faster time flies. So many things take precedence in our lives…school, jobs, mates, pregnancy, babies, moving, broken water pipes, broken bones, kids who have pushed us to the wall/limit…even politics! You name it.
Maybe you’ve looked in the mirror and wondered who is that wrinkled woman staring back at you. She reminds you of your mother, or worse, your grandmother. You lean closer to scrutinize the ravages of time. Not a good idea! Deep down, you know your reflection is not a true image of the real, much younger woman who dwells inside that lovely patina façade, but damn! Everything is heading south! Stretch marks, subtle drooping of the intimate parts of your body, nasty cellulite…the panoramic view is just too much.
In our alone moments, we’ve lamented, “No! I don’t want to grow old!” Confess it. Go ahead. Say it right out loud. How could Mother Nature be so cruel? Life’s been tough and you’ve earned the right to be depressed once in a while, right? Of course you have. But the fact is, we—you and I—need to fix whatever is fixable and enjoy the satisfaction of knowing we can. And yes, it helps—in fact, it’s darn near imperative—to have the support and love of close friends, sometimes family if you’re lucky, who will listen to, and honor, your feelings during the process.
The good news is that many women today, young and old alike, are experiencing a surge of strength and power. They’re working at owning their own space and making choices based on the power of that ownership. But not all of us. Breaking free can oftentimes lead to frustration and unhappiness.
It’s possible to overcome life’s struggles, but to do so requires opening the doors marked Emotional, Spiritual, Physical and Mental. It’s time to move into a loving life filled with plenty of laughter. On the following pages, you’ll read about real life experiences—some mine, and some other women’s—which will give you the insight to change from “Damn, I’m getting old!” to “I’ve only just begun!” It’s never too late and you’re never too old! Now, go get a cuppa tea, a latté or a glass of wine and let’s go!
